What Happened When Starlink Started Offering Free Installs

By Torren Davis, owner, Reliable Orbit InstallationsPosted 1 min read

When I heard Starlink was offering free kits and free installs, I'll be honest: I figured this side of my business was in trouble. For a couple of weeks, the phone did get a little quieter.

Then it started ringing more than ever.

People were calling us to come fix the installs done by the contractors Starlink sent out. We've seen messy cabling, missing weatherproofing, and dishes mounted in spots where trees blocked the sky. Some customers told us their installer tried to tack on extra charges or upsell them on things they didn't need. Others said their installer showed up without the right hardware and had to reschedule. More than a few were told the installer couldn't go higher than one story or couldn't get up on the roof at all.

I'm not here to knock anybody, and a free install can work out fine. But what I keep seeing is that a free install isn't free if it has to be done twice.
