What is Amazon Leo? Should East Texas wait for it instead of getting Starlink?

The short answer

Amazon Leo is Amazon's satellite internet network, renamed from Project Kuiper in late 2025. As of mid-2026 it had about 394 satellites in orbit and expected to start initial service later in 2026, with consumer pricing still unannounced. If you need internet now in rural East Texas, don't wait. Starlink is available today, and you can always switch later if Leo earns it.

Amazon is building its own satellite internet network. It's called Amazon Leo (it used to be Project Kuiper), and it's the first big challenger to Starlink's low-orbit network. Here's where things stand and what it means for East Texas.

What is Amazon Leo?

It's Amazon's low-Earth-orbit satellite network, the same idea as Starlink: hundreds of satellites beaming internet down to a dish on your roof. Amazon renamed the program from Project Kuiper to Amazon Leo in November 2025 as it shifted from building to launching.

Where does it stand right now?

As of July 2026, Amazon had 394 satellites in orbit and said initial service would begin later in 2026, expected to start near the far northern and southern latitudes and spread toward the equator. The full first-generation network calls for more than 3,200 satellites. For comparison, Starlink has more than 11,000 satellites up and is already serving customers across the US.

Amazon has announced three terminals: the portable Leo Nano (up to 100 Mbps), the standard Leo Pro (up to 400 Mbps), and the Leo Ultra (up to 1 Gbps, aimed at businesses and government). Amazon started with enterprise and government customers, and consumer pricing hasn't been announced.

Should you wait for it?

If you need internet now, no. Starlink is available today, and it's the only low-orbit satellite service you can sign up for at an East Texas home right now. Leo's consumer launch date, coverage and pricing are all still unknown.

That said, competition is good for everybody. A second satellite network fighting for your business should push prices down and speeds up over time. When Leo's consumer service goes live and the pricing is real, we'll look at it honestly like we do everything else.

Common questions

When will Amazon Leo be available in East Texas?
Amazon has said initial service should begin later in 2026, expected to start near the far northern and southern latitudes and spread toward the equator as more satellites launch. No firm date or Texas availability has been announced. Amazon lists availability at leo.amazon.com.
How much will Amazon Leo cost?
Consumer pricing hasn't been announced. Amazon CEO Andy Jassy has said it will cost less than alternatives, but there are no plan or hardware prices yet.
Will Amazon Leo be faster than Starlink?
Amazon's top terminal, the Leo Ultra, is designed for speeds up to 1 Gbps, aimed at businesses and government. The entry Leo Nano is rated up to 100 Mbps. Real-world speeds will depend on the finished network.
Is Amazon Leo the same as Project Kuiper?
Yes. Amazon renamed Project Kuiper to Amazon Leo in November 2025 as the program moved from development into active satellite deployment.
